Richard Wiel Campbell passed away peacefully at the Mirabella retirement community.
Born in Seattle, Dick lived a full and accomplished life marked by quiet strength, love of the outdoors, and a genuine interest in others. Known for his kindness, calm demeanor, and unwavering positivity, he was someone people truly enjoyed being around.
A graduate of Mt. Baker High School, Dick served as senior class president and vice president of the ski club. His early love of adventure led him to fish for salmon in Bristol Bay, Alaska.
Dick graduated from the University of Washington, where he participated in the ROTC program and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He went on to fulfill his Air Force commitment as a jet pilot with assignments in TX, NC, FL, and McChord AFB.
He and his family settled on Mercer Island, building a waterfront home on the east side of the island where they lived for 35 years. He was a long-time member of MI Congregational Church and Rotary #4. Dick was a devoted father to his children, Bob (Elizabeth) and Linda (Bob Johnson), and a loving husband to Marilyn; of 70 years.
Dick founded his own HVAC engineering firm, where he worked until 1988. Retirement was anything but quiet -- he stayed active skiing as a 30 year member of Skier's Inc at Crystal Mountain, golfing at Broadmoor Golf Club, and playing tennis at Mercer Island County Club.
He is also survived by his sister Millie; four grandchildren (Bobby Johnson, Amy Day, Austin Campbell and Anna Hobbs) and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial will be held in his honor on Saturday October 4th at 2:00 p.m. in the Northwest Dining Room at Mirabella (116 Fairview Ave N).
He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Sign Dick's online Guest Book at obituaries.seattletimes.com.
