Michael J. Berlin

Dec 5, 1938 — Aug 10, 2026

Mike Berlin died on August 10, 2026, in Seattle. He was born in Brooklyn in 1938 and lived a life that gave him great pleasure and happiness. He met his wife Nancy when he was a senior at Columbia College, and she was a sophomore at Barnard College. He always knew he wanted to be a reporter, and after being news editor at his college newspaper, received a Master's in 1960 from the Columbia School of Journalism.

Mike and Nancy married in 1962, and after a six-month trip to Europe, he started his career. He worked at the Associated Press, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Houston Post, The San Francisco Chronicle and The New York Herald Tribune before spending 20 years covering the United Nations for The New York Post and The Washington Post. He taught journalism seminars at Columbia University and, on Fulbright Fellowships, in China and Russia. In 1990 he became an associate professor at Boston University's School of Communications, where he remained until retiring to Cape Cod. Even during retirement, he continued teaching and facilitating discussions on media and current events at libraries and institutes for continuing education throughout the United States. He and Nancy also had several residencies at the American Academy in Rome.

Nancy and Mike often spent time in Seattle, visiting their daughter Meredith and her husband Larry and their children, Anthony and Keara. Travel, international and domestic, has always been a major part of their lives, and much of it involved exploring national parks by hiking and rafting. Mike ran a few NYC marathons, played a lot of tennis, and, with Nancy, became a doting grandparent.
