Celebrating the Beautiful Life of Mary Sleeth Paananen
Mary Sleeth Paananen, a dedicated healer, lifelong learner and teacher, and beloved family matriarch, passed away peacefully on July 4, 2026. Mary left behind a profound legacy of love, community advocacy, and intellectual curiosity. She was brilliantly winsome, spontaneous, and whimsical.
Born in Spokane into a family deeply rooted in faith and public service, Mary spent her eighty-one years enriching the health, minds, and spirits of everyone around her. Her life was defined by a passion for global equity, human rights, and the empowerment of women and families. Leaving her hometown of Spokane after high school, Mary traveled to Portland, Oregon, where she studied nursing at Emanuel Hospital. She then honorably answered the call of duty during the Vietnam War, serving overseas as a United States Air Force operational base nurse in Thailand. Upon returning to civilian life in Spokane, Mary closely mirrored her mother’s impactful career, serving as a dedicated public health nurse in Spokane.
Her journey eventually led her to Seattle, where she worked at Children’s Hospital and attended the University of Washington to earn her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). It was during this time (1975) that she met Terry Paananen, whom she married in 1976. Throughout her career, she was a deeply compassionate Registered Nurse (RN), always prioritizing the dignity and comfort of her patients.
Driven initially by a personal desire to be the best possible mother to her own children, Mary discovered her true calling at the intersection of parenting and behavioral science, transforming herself into a masterful and highly respected parent educator. She immersed herself in the works of human development pioneers, finding lifelong inspiration in the accessible frameworks of Jean Illsley Clarke, Erik Erikson, and Abraham Maslow. For decades, Mary dedicated her life to giving local parents the tools, confidence, and structure needed to build healthy, loving homes. By 1990, she had stepped into vital leadership as a parent facilitator trainer, mentoring other educators and hosting workshops that rippled positive change through countless local families.
Mary became an indispensable pillar of her local neighborhood. An avid reader who firmly believed that education was a universal right, she championed youth literacy programs and established a beloved neighborhood Little Free Library right in her front yard. She was the welcoming soul who always had time for a thoughtful conversation, a book recommendation, or a comforting word. One of her very last wishes was a request to her family to save their money to ensure that her beloved grandchildren always have all the books they could ever want to read.
Mary’s brilliant and whimsical mind naturally expanded her horizons into academic psychology and counseling. She became a highly respected researcher in personality dynamics, focusing her sharp analytical skills on Transactional Analysis to better understand human relationships and personal autonomy. Her collaborative research was presented at prestigious national conferences and published in the peer- reviewed Transactional Analysis Journal, earning her the lasting respect of peers across the country.
Above all, Mary’s greatest joy, proudest achievement, and crowning legacy was the beautiful family she intentionally built alongside her husband, Terry. Mary and Terry nurtured a beautiful partnership defined by a lifetime of laughter, deep friendship, and shared dreams. Their journey as parents began with the immense joy of bringing their firstborn son, Will, into the world. Mary’s maternal love truly knew no boundaries; she and Terry later opened their hearts and home to expand their family, adopting three more children, Jon, Jeff, and Erin, as their own. She beautifully instilled in her children the core values of kindness, lifelong education, and resilient determination that she taught to so many others.
As an adored matriarch, her guiding spirit shines brightly through her four children and her many grandchildren, all of whom she mentored, protected, and cheered onward with unconditional love. She also leaves behind her beloved brother, Tim, with whom she shared an unbreakable lifelong bond, a quick wit, and a treasured archive of family history. Mary now joins her late parents, Donathon Charles Sleeth and Ruth Hunsberger Sleeth, in eternal rest.
Mary’s beliefs were not just spoken; they were lived. Throughout her life, she quietly and selflessly devoted every dollar she could to help charities both locally and globally, focused on the advancement, protection, and equity of women, children, and immigrant communities.
