John Rochford, a beacon of kindness and generosity, left our world on February 7, 2026, in Seattle, Washington, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on June 5, 1958, in El Paso, Texas, John's life journey was one marked by compassion, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to service. John's formative years in El Paso were just the beginning of a life that would touch countless hearts. He attended high school at the Abbey in Canon City, CO. His pursuit of higher education led him to the University of San Francisco, where he graduated with a degree in Biology and set the foundation for his future endeavors. Upon graduation, John felt a calling to join the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in the Pacific Northwest, where he would leave an indelible mark on the Seattle community.
As a young man, John dedicated himself to the service of others, beginning with his work at the Fremont Public Association in Seattle. There, he was instrumental in ensuring safe transportation for elders and those living with disabilities. His compassion knew no bounds, and his dedication saw him rise from volunteer to manager, touching lives at every turn.
John's professional journey continued at King County Metro Access where his leadership and vision contributed to the betterment of public services. Access provides transportation to elders and those living with a disability. Upon retirement, he left behind a legacy of improvement and advocacy that continues to benefit the community he so loved.
His spirit of volunteerism was matched by his passion for music. As a long-time Seattle member of the Seattle Men's Chorus, John's voice resonated not just in song but in his actions as president of the board. His love for music was a melody that harmonized with all aspects of his life, bringing joy to those who heard him sing and worked alongside him.
A man of faith, John's Catholic beliefs were the compass that guided his actions and interactions. He served on the board of Wider Horizons with a vision that elevated the organization to new heights, embodying the very principles of community and support.
Family was the cornerstone of John's life. He is survived by his devoted husband, Nicholas Utzinger, and his loving siblings, Helen Baumgartner of Anacortes, WA, Patti Scott of Vernon, TX, and Tim Rochford of Mesa, AZ. He was preceded in death by his brother Joe Rochford.
To speak of John is to speak of a man who lived with purpose and love. His life was a masterclass in empathy, a testament to the power of a kind word, a generous deed, and an intelligent approach to the challenges we face. His legacy is not just in what he did, but in the lives he inspired, the community he built, and the love he shared.
Let us honor John Raphael Rochford by living as he did—with open hearts, open minds, and open arms. Though his melody has quieted, the echoes of his life's song will continue to inspire and uplift us all. John's journey was one of joy, service, and love. May we each find a note of that in our daily lives and carry his chorus forward.
