Dolores Hodgkin

d. September 5, 2024

Our amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother Dolores Georgina (Scott) Hodgkin, 89, (affectionately known as Granny), passed away peacefully on September 5, 2024.  She was a wonderful woman who filled us to the brim with joyful noise.  Dolores was born on August 9, 1935, to Alfred and Kathleen Scott.  She grew up in the Pigeon Hill neighborhood of West Seattle with her sister Alleen. They were a tight family who enjoyed family trips with relatives and close friends.  Dolores married Terry Mason and welcomed two sons, Scott and Devin.  She later married Lee Hodgkin and welcomed two more sons, Kelly and Mitchell.  Their young family enjoyed boating, island adventures on Herron Island, swimming at North Lake (every day when the temperature hit 70) and trips to union functions across the country.

Dolores had a lust for life and adventure.  Some of her greatest joys were boating Puget Sound with Lee on their boat, Delarosea. She loved the holidays and dragging out all the decorations - none rated higher than St. Patrick’s Day.  Cooking, entertaining, singing, hydroplane racing, road trips, functions with the Thursday girls and her faith fulfilled her.  Dolores owned and operated Des Moines Florist with her business partner, Jan Parker, for many years and loved to surprise friends with beautiful bouquets. Dolores had many passions and was a strong advocate for the developmentally disabled and worker’s rights.

Family meant everything to Dolores.  She is survived by her sons, Scott Mason (Patty) and Kelly Hodgkin (Debbie).  Granny loved spending time with her eight grandchildren: Chelsea Mason-Placek (Joe), Kirsten Mason, Evan Mason, Kayla Gordon (Mike), Marina Hodgkin, Brendan Mason, Brianna Tracy (Matt) and Meghan Mason. She relished time with her nine great grandchildren:  Grae, Rowan, Nico, Raenna, Harley, Styles, Lois, Gavin and Roslyn.  Granny had many other loved ones she considered her own such as step-grandkids Alexandra (Tyler) Roberts, Adam (Kelly) Romeo (Delilah, Emma) and Alec Johnston.  Terry Mason’s daughter’s Michele Buergel (Tom) and Lori Mason and their families who considered Dolores as their mother and Granny too.

Dolores is preceded in death by her husband of 51 years Lee; parents, Alfred and Kathleen; her sister Alleen; sons Mitchell Hodgkin and Devin Mason; daughter-in-law Linda Mason.  She lived her last years in her “happy place” Herron Island with her many caring friends.  Rest in peace Mom, Granny, cherished friend.  We will always carry your memory in our hearts.

Services to be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 22975 24th Ave S, in Des Moines on Wednesday, September 11 at 11am.  A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, September 14 at North Beach on Herron Island at 5pm. Passes are required for the ferry and may be obtained from any family member.
