Christine Barrett

Christine Barrett, 87, passed away on June 9, 2025, leaving behind a rich legacy of friendship, intellect, dedication, and compassion.

Born on May 11, 1938, in San Diego, CA, Christine was the daughter of Lt. Cmdr. Allan C. Edmands, Sr. and Mary Hawes Edmands Ashbrook. She spent her formative years following her father's passing in World War II, in Centralia, WA. Christine fondly shared many colorful stories about growing up in Centralia with extended family, including her beloved stepfather Harry Lee Ashbrook.

Christine earned a Bachelor of Science in history and political science from Lewis and Clark College and briefly worked as a stewardess for Northwest Orient Airlines soon after graduating. Once her children were grown, she settled into a meaningful career as a coordinator for medical student education in the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery.

Her love for history and storytelling found expression in her published book, A History of Laurelhurst, an in-depth exploration of the Seattle neighborhood’s transformation over the years. Beyond her professional achievements, Christine had a remarkable talent for crafts including sewing, calligraphy, and quilting, among others—often donating handmade items to the Ryther Child Center.

Christine is survived by her beloved daughters, Susannah Anderson (Paul), Mary Ullrich (Greg), and JJ Barrett, as well as her cherished grandchildren, Cody Anderson, Thomas Anderson, and Harry Ullrich, who lovingly knew her as “Gaumbie.” She is also mourned by her siblings, Allan Edmands, Jr. and Janna Yarnot.

In honor of Christine’s love for history and philanthropy, donations may be made to the Museum of History and Industry, Burke Museum, or the Ryther Child Center.

Christine lived a life filled with adventure, scholarship, and love. Her legacy will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
